“One Lord, One Faith, One Family: Disability Ministry in a Synodal Church” - October 21-22, 2022

 Keynote Speakers

B. Cahill

Most Rev. Bishop Brendan J. Cahill, S.T.D.

Bishop of the Diocese of Victoria in TX

Christ’s Love Impels Us (2 Cor. 5:14)

Sixty years ago St. John XXIII in communion with the Catholic Bishops from around the world delivered a ‘Message to Humanity’ before the start of the Second Vatican Council. This message served as an inspiration and motivation for the work of the Council. Bishop Cahill will trace the background of this address and its influence on the opening days of the Council. This serves as a guide to understand more deeply the teaching at the end of the Council in Gaudium et spes 27: ‘the Council lays stress on respect for the human person’. This teaching still can inspire and motivate our work!

Better Together: How a Mindset of Inclusion Benefits the Whole Church

Inclusion of persons with disabilities is part of what it means to be “One Church,” but effective disability ministry requires a paradigm shift for clergy, lay ministry leaders, and parishioners. Together, with a catechetical author and clinical psychologist, we will reflect on what it takes to have an inclusive mindset, what this looks like in practice, and why disability ministry benefits the whole Church – not only persons with disabilities. We’ll also talk about how to navigate potential challenges and pitfalls, including fear of the unknown.

Catholics across the US have a longing to see parishes be places of belonging for all, including individuals with disabilities, as has been heard throughout the synodal process. Many times, however, parish leaders don’t know where to start.

Join us for a keynote address by the Most Rev. Bishop Brendan J. Cahill, S.T.D., Diocese of Victoria in Texas, and a keynote address by Dr. Joseph White, Director of Catechetical Resources for Our Sunday Visitor Publishing.

There will also be numerous breakout sessions, a panel presentation, roundtables, and a plenary address. In addition, we anticipate numerous exhibitors and in-person networking opportunities being available to enhance participants conference experience, their families, and caregivers, and more.

The NCPD Council on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (CIDD), is coordinating this conference.
