Disability Ministry Advocate Wins National Award
Dr. Nancy Thompson was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for 2014 by the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL). Dr. Thompson, the Director of Programs and Diocesan Relations for the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) and a leader in disability ministry received this prestigious award at the NCCL annual convention held May 19 - 22 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Loyola Press 2013 Opening Doors Parish Award Winner Announced
The Opening Door’s Award highlights the importance of parishes recognizing the gifts and needs of persons with disabilities. Janice Benton, Executive Director of NCPD, in announcing the selection of All Saints, a large, urban parish in Dallas, Texas, said “All Saints sets a standard that other parishes should strive to achieve as they make efforts at welcoming persons with disabilities into a parish community. The parish’s willingness to embark on new initiatives to meet identified needs and to call forth the gifts of persons with disabilities captured the attention of the selection committee.”
NCPD Announces Recipients of Four National Awards in the Disability Ministry Field

The presentation was made at NCPD’s National Conference, Partnership 2013: Where Faith and Disability Meet, in Houston, Texas, November 2, 2013. His Eminence Daniel Cardinal Dinardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Texas, received the Visionary Leadership Award recognizing an individual who possesses a vision for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the life of the Catholic Church.
NCPD Autism Task Force Encourages Parishes to Observe April as Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. The National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) calls on parishes and dioceses to observe this commemorative month. The NCPD website has resources for this observation such as Prayers of the Faithful and a bulletin announcement to support your ministry at www.ncpd.org. The NCPD Autism Task Force (Task Force) joins with others across our nation to support efforts of dioceses and parishes in their ministry to and with people with autism and their families.
Statement of Dorothy Coughlin on the Disability Implications of Physician-Assisted Suicide
As a resident of Oregon, the first state to legalize assisted suicide, and a family member of a person with profound developmental disability, I am acutely aware of how the passage of physician-assisted suicide has had an adverse impact on the lives of people with disabilities. You live with the continual fear that whoever is providing medical care will regard your life (or the life of a family member) as having less value, and will weigh the risk-to-benefit based on their determination of your quality of life. People with disabilities living in Oregon under this legislation, which purports to provide compassion and choice, are at great risk to experience neither.
Physician-Assisted Suicide Presents Clear and Dangerous Threat to Lives of People with Disabilities
(Bellevue, WA) On Thursday, June 16, 2011, at their Spring General Assembly in Seattle, the U.S. Catholic bishops voted on a statement outlining the Church’s moral objections to physician-assisted suicide. The statement, To Live Each Day with Dignity, details longstanding Church teaching on the life and dignity of the human person, and reflects on how this teaching relates to people with terminal illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
